Description
Desert View Watchtower is a 70-foot high stone building along the southern rim of the Grand Canyon. The four story structure was designed by architect Mary Colter. Completed in 1932, it was designed to resemble an ancestral Puebloan watchtower, but is much bigger than typical. Mary Colter was one of the few female American architects in her day, and designed various structures around the National Park. Her work helped to create a style of architecture blending Spanish Colonial and Mission Revival with Native American motifs and Rustic elements that became popular throughout the southwest.
